Argyroupolis

Northwest of Crete, 22 km west of Rethymno and 45 km east of Chania is the village of Argyroupoli. One of the most beautiful traditional villages of Crete with a rich history and natural beauty. The village stands where "Ancient Lappa" was located in antiquity, a well-known historical and commercial center of the time. Its current name was given in 1822 and remains the same until today.

The village has hidden historical spots that testify its past to attentive visitors. With a walk in the central square of the village you will come across the ancient ruins of the then city. Following the paved road to the right of the arch, you will encounter on your way the Roman mosaic from ancient Roman baths, the Roman villa and a number of small Byzantine churches. Among the attractions of the area, just outside the residential area but accessible on foot from our complex, are the Greco-Roman cemetery of ancient Lappa and the small church of St. 5 Virgins. Carved tombs, caves and a 2000-year-old evergreen sycamore stand out among the enchanting greenery and flowing waters. It is described by many as a "little paradise".

Exploring Argyroupoli at the foot of the village, you will find its famous springs. It is an idyllic location with dense vegetation, centuries-old trees, running water, small waterfalls and ponds. In the same area under a rock is the small church of Ag. Ioannis (Ag. Dynami), where the waters spring from there and used to move the water mills. The area has many traditional taverns to enjoy your food in nature, and most of them are the ruins of the old aqueduct, which supplied water to the village in the past.

Discover Argyroupoli and the world of Ancient Lappa and create unforgettable memories in the little hidden paradise of Crete.
